Lingual Fixed Braces
What are Lingual Braces?
Unlike traditional braces, lingual braces are positioned behind the teeth. At M-Brace we use Incognito lingual braces which offers a high tech, low profile treatment.
- Braces fitted behind the teeth, are described as lingual from lingua, the Latin word for tongue. Concealed on the inside of the teeth, they are most often worn by adult private patients who want their teeth straightened but don’t want their braces to be seen by others.
- Each of the gold alloy brackets are individually made using state-of-the-art technology which creates accurate brackets that give excellent tooth control.
- Incognito’s high-tech, low profile design provides accurate levels of treatment but with maximum comfort.
- There are many lingual systems, including customised and non-customised options. It’s also possible to have invisible lingual braces on your upper teeth and standard braces on lower teeth.
- One benefit of lingual braces is that they are less likely to mark the teeth than standard braces; a small risk of orthodontic treatment is decalcification – an attack on tooth enamel producing white marks, and is usually the result of poor diet and oral hygiene. Research shows that lingual braces lower this risk.
What are the benefits of Lingual Braces?
- As with all brace systems which are fixed to teeth, they allow for greater three dimensional control than removable treatments which means we can treat and improve a wider range of problems.
- As the braces are attached to the back of the teeth they are invisible in most situations so you can have treatment without anyone realising it.
- High precision control means that your treatment may take less time, and provide accurate alignment.
- A low profile design means that, as you become used to wearing braces, they will prove more comfortable
What else should I consider?
- For a short while after your lingual braces are fitted you may find speaking a little more difficult than you would normally and may feel some tongue sensitivity. These generally resolve themselves quickly as you get used to the braces.
- You will need to practise diligent oral hygiene to ensure your teeth and braces remain as clean as possible.
- The higher laboratory fees, technical materials, and increased surgery times means that lingual appliances are more expensive than conventional braces, however we will be able to discuss budgets and payment plans with you to make the treatment accessible.
